Interview with H.H. Bancroft, commenting on his various historical studies of Oregon, Washington, and the Northwest Coast, with some personal background information, including the circumstances of his coming to Olympia in 1851 and his association with Governor Isaac I. Stevens in Pacific Railroad explorations and in Washington Territorial affairs. Included are four letters to H.H. Bancroft and Mrs. F.F. Victor, 1880-1884, giving information on various historical problems, and his views on the question of the Hudson's Bay Company and Jesuit responsibility for the Whitman Massacre.

Elwood Evans was born about 1828. By the early 1850's he was living in Olympia, WA. He was one of the first attorneys to practice in Olympia. Ezekial Thatcher was clerk of the Parkville School District, Shasta County, Calif. He emigrated to California from Pennsylvania in 1850 and helped establish the first school district in the Parkville area. Elwood Evans (1828-1898), born in Philadelphia, went to Oregon Territory in 1851 as deputy collector of customs at Nisqually. From 1859 to 1861, he served as mayor of the newly incorporated town of Olympia, Washington.
